About Seisuiji

Formal name : Dantoku-san Seisui-ji

 One of the most famous temple in Sado Island, "Seisuji" which is located 185-isina-sado city, was erectded in 806 Daido-era. At that time, there were a lot of ascetic monk at the innermost sanctuary. The temple is quite famous for its crystal stream well up from the earth,in the mountain behind the temple. The temple's principal image is "Kongoukai-Dainichi-Nyorai"

  It was used as daily life water for village people live nearby, and also usuful for travelers too.  It is good to drink even now. The water is believed that it has three different kind of power named, "Nyoi-no-mizu","Chouju-no-mizu", "Chie-no-mizu". "Nyoi" means fulfil someone's hopes as one likes and "Mizu" means cold water . "Chouju" means longvity. "Chie" means wisdom. According to legend, only the person who has beautiful in mind, can only see the "bonji"- The form the foundation of classical Sanskrit - in the water. It is said that the people who can see the "bonji"- in this holy water,the prayers answered.

 In 1781-tenmei era started, A Man, named "Mokujiki-Gyodo" stayed the temple ,he made a lot of sculpture of the Buddha carved in wood. His work, "Yakushi-Nyorai-Zazou" and "Jizou-Sonritu-Zou have an enormous reputation.

 Just as like landmarks to guide, there are two pairing about 700 years old ginkgo trees in front of the gate. They are loved not only Buddhist parishioner but also people living in the neighborhood. Tradition says the trees protected the temple. When the temple on fire, the trees extinguished by spewing water from the tip of branch. they are believed thatt "miracle-working trees", also they has a power to cure disease of children. So that the ginko treees are also symbol of religious belief too. So many "Gankake-Jizou" are around the trees, wishing for a safe delivery or blessing with children.
